CCSEP & EPIA Call for a Cessation of Dodgers Friday Fireworks

In December 2020, members of our Steering Committee met with the Echo Park Improvement Association (EPIA) to discuss why now may be a good time to ask the Dodgers to do a reset in in-game programming, including fireworks at every Friday night home game. The timing was particularly appropriate as we emerge from a COVID-ravaged 2020 season with no one attending ballgames at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers began this game-day programming element as a regular feature when the team was under the ownership of Frank McCourt back around 2007, a time when the Dodgers were struggling for attendance. Almost immediately, the residents surrounding the Elysian Park area began to complain about the regular noise thrashing their homes. Families were suffering every Friday night home game, and cessation of these fireworks has been an annual request for nearly 15 years.

Our organization and EPIA sent a meeting request to Dodgers officials with both City Council Districts 1 and 13 invited. A Zoom meeting was held on Wednesday February 17, with Dodgers representatives, members from our organization, EPIA and representatives from both Gil Cedillo and Mitch O’Farrell’s offices.

We began the meeting asking for more information about what the Dodgers anticipated for in-game programming in 2021. The Dodger representatives pointed out the possibility of in-person attendance at games in 2021, but even if allowed, crowds might be severely restricted. Beyond that, the only significant change was a new sound system.

Our organization and EPIA then made a request that the Dodgers revert to the older tradition of “grand” fireworks only on public holidays and special occasions. We said that, because of a discontinuity due to COVID, fan expectations could be more easily shifted than during a normal season — a chance to establish new traditions. Additionally, it’s an enormous opportunity to earn goodwill and build a positive relationship with the local community.

Dodger representatives made it clear in the meeting that they would discuss these ideas and get back to our organizations. They recognized this opportunity for change and appreciated the us voicing this issue at this time and presenting benefits for all parties.
