Trailhead Parks and Trails to Reopen with Safety Precautions May 9

On Friday, May 8, Los Angeles enters Stage II of the coronavirus crisis response, allowing some retail establishments to offer curbside pick-up only. In addition, trails, trailhead parks and golf courses (including Elysian Park trails) will reopen Saturday, May 9.

Even as parks reopen, visitors will need to adhere to social distancing and wear face coverings while in public. These necessary safety precautions prevent a surge of infections as we return to public spaces. According to the Safer LA website, “Everyone should continue to limit travel and non-essential activities and stay home as much as possible.”

This staged approached allows for fewer restrictions over a long period of time. Key milestones much be reached before the City moves to the next stage.

For more information and updates, please visit the Safer LA website or the California Coronavirus Response page.

MLK Day Tree Planting in Elysian Park

MLK Day Tree Planting

MLK Day Tree Planting in Elysian Park

On Sunday, January 19, 2020, members of the Citizens Committee teamed up with about 50 volunteers to help plant 70 new trees in Elysian Park in honor of Tu B’Shvat (“New Year of the Trees”) & MLK Day of Service.

This project was spearheaded by LA Rec and Parks Forester Leon Boroditsky, who was awarded a Cal Fire Grant to plant trees in parks throughout the city. Rachel O’Leary the Program Director for City Plants also participated in the event, as did members of the LA Conservation Corps and LA’s new City Forest Officer, Rachel Malarich.

The trees were planted, staked, mulched, and watered in short order and a good time was had by all!
